Let a Professional Take the Pictures and Enjoy Yourself!
As cameras became simple and dropped in price, everyone became an amateur photographer. Then digital photography took over and the average person can now take the pictures and print the results cheaper than they formerly let others do it. In spite of this, there are some good reasons, at least sometimes, to let others do the picture taking.
First, if you are the family photographer, you know the bondage it can be to always be looking for the ‘perfect shot’. To be good you must think like a photographer. Too often you realize that, after all was done, you had the pictures without even enjoying the reason you were there? Recently we learned that our granddaughter would be in a parade that would be streamed on the Internet. I spent the time trying to get the camera to focus on the TV and missed seeing her. I wish I had just enjoyed the moment and waited until they sent the pictures.
It is true that, with all the electronics, cameras today can be very easy to use. However, the more ‘stuff’ a camera can do, the more there is to keep track of. What do all those little pictures on top of the camera mean? Do you know how to turn on or off the auto focus or flash? What does TV, P, M, or Av mean? Of course you can look them up in the manual but unless you keep using the features, you will forget and then they are as if not present on the camera.
As the photographer, you are often required to get into obtuse contortions or obnoxious places to get just the right shot. Further, many people are self-conscious and don’t like their picture taken. You may well be required to prod and cajole them into smiling just once more. Wouldn’t you like to let someone else do all that next time?
All right, you do become the chief photographer at an important event. Now you are the hero whom others figure has all the time in the world to send them CDs filled with all your good shots. Or they may impose on your spare time with requests to email the best 200 shots to them.
It is not just a matter of time either. Though digital photography need never be printed, some friends simply don’t have access to this media. For them you will need to buy photographic paper and lots of ink for your printer. Are you without a printer? In that case, make sure you get one that has six or more different color cartridges since you will be replacing each one often.
If you want to look like a tourist, by all means hang a camera around your neck and draw it to your eye regularly. And don’t be surprised if people decide your pictures are more important to you than they are.
Think of this: if you have a minor plumbing problem, you fix it yourself. But when a major problem arises, you take it to a mechanic. This principle also applies to photography. Sure, keep your camera and take plenty of shots. But when it comes to those really important events, hire an expert, kick up your heels, and enjoy yourself for once.
When you want your photos done right, choosing the best photographer for your needs is worth the investment. If you follow the principles above, you will likely be glad you had it done professionally.
