Resolution, Pixels and Mega Pixels in Digital Photography
Messing up images’ resolutions and dimensions is not a laughing matter, but unfortunately it happens even in specialized environments. If someone tells you they want a picture printed that is of 300 dpi, you won’t be able to understand what they want, but sadly they don’t understand either why you can’t serve them. Compared to classic photos, that are a tangible piece of paper, the digital image doesn’t have physic dimensions that can be easily perceived. Normal pictures are only defined by two variables: length and width, so if someone says a picture is 20 x 30, we immediately understand what they want. But in digital photography, saying an image is 20 x 30 centimeters makes no sense the same way as saying it has 300 dpi doesn’t make any sense.
A digital image is made up from pixels, a word witch comes from the expression picture elements and is used to define the smallest components parts of the respective image. So, in order to obtain an absolute and accurate measurement of a digital image, we will use pixels instead of centimeters. Saying an image is 300 x 150 pixels gives an idea about its digital shape. But people can’t tell how much a pixel means, because there are no real tangible dimensions to define it, so we also use picture resolution.
The resolution in digital photography is actually a density measure, of how many pixels can be found in one inch or in one centimeter. Remember the dpi concept previously mentioned? Now, we have all the variables: density, length and width in pixels, so real dimensions can be calculated for any picture.
years ago, digital photography was limited to low resolution because images could not be immortalized in high quality. Since then, even if the mega pixel number increased a lot, it is still essential. This mega pixel number shows the amount of pixels a camera can process and transform at a certain moment and the higher it is, the better the camera sales.
