The Canon XF300 and Canon XF305 camcorders are Compact Flash-friendly. And they\'re essentially more compact but a bit heavier containing some really improved features.

Essentially, the biggest improvement is the move to Compact Flash. The cameras support UDMA with dual slots. And there is a SDHC slot on the bodies. This slot is for stills and transferring settings.

The new Canon XF Codec encodes MPEG-2 video with 4:2:2 color sampling at a maximum bitrate of 50 megabits per second. The camcorders can handle a variety of resolutions and frame rates. Most importantly, there\'s a maximum of 1080/60i/30p/24p and 720/60p/30p/24p. The files use MXF wrappers for software compatibility.

The Canon XF300 and Canon XF305, like the older, similar models, distinguish themselves simply by a set of jacks. These jacks make the Canon XF305 appropriate for multi-camcorder, broadcast, environments. Then there\'s HD-SDI output, genlock and SMPTE time code) (in/out). Canon\'s also increased the resolution so that it now incorporates three 1920/1080 sensors. And the lens has been decreased from 20x to a wider angle 18x model, with a 35mm-equivalent range of 29.3-527.4mm and an improved manual, focus feel.

The lens also incorporates the image stabilisation advances that Canon introduced in its 2010 HFS series of consumer models. This really provides very good compensation for shake during motion. The XF 300 and XF 305 also use Canon\'s DIGIC DV III image processor, (similarly to the prosumer models) which offers traditional consumer-level features, like face detection.

The LCD and viewfinders are really great. The LCD has a diagonal size of 4 inches and a resolution of 1.23 megapixels, while the viewfinder is 0.52 inches (a little smaller than the XH models) with a resolution of 1.55 megapixels.

In relation to editing, all the major softwares will support the XF300 and XF305\'s files natively which of course, makes footage transfer extremely simple - just slot the CF card in your computer\'s card reader.

Basically, these camcorders are very versatile and can be used for a whole host of things. The first things that come to mind though, are the needs of documentary, \'reality\' producers. For events such as weddings videography they\'re absolutely perfect given they\'re able to record a whole day\'s events on two cards. And this is all without the requirement for any post-shoot capture or transcoding.

The world of film making is loaded with choices and decisions. Among those, what script to produce as well as what team to put together are very important. Most camcorders use tapes that can fit into VCR's. These are cheap and easy to find. The disadvantages of using them are, you need to rewind the tape often to check your scenes, and if you aren't satisfied with what you have shot, you must either tape over it, or use a new tape. Tapes do wear down over time, and even after only a few tapings you will notice wear and the picture is usually not as clear.

Film and tape have an additional downfall, they most often appear dark. In order to prevent this, your goal is to provide adequate light while maintaining a natural feel.

Digital

Digital cameras are easier to find new, as they are phasing out the old tape camcorders. With the abundance of effects and editing options on a digital camera, you can make a professional looking film much faster than with film or tape.

Digital cameras have a disadvantage of the picture looking too bright or clear, with no depth to the scene. If you have ever looked at a picture on an old 35mm and compared it to a digital camera you will know what I mean.

A digital camera is very clear, however it is very difficult to capture the same shading and lighting every time unless you are an expert at editing programs and lighting.

Digital cameras allow you to check your shots right away, by simply clicking on the play button or connecting the camera to a computer and watching it. It's much easier to erase too, just click the delete button and it's gone. You don't have to worry about re-using tapes and having them wear out on you.

Another advantage to using a digital camcorder is it's much easier to upload your film to your computer for editing. All you have to do is connect the camera, upload the files and open your editing program. With a tape camcorder, you will need a convertor to connect to the computer.

Special effects are a breeze with a digital camcorder as well. All you need is to open the files already loaded on your computer and simply add the effects you desire.

One disadvantage to digital cameras, they are more expensive. A hard drive camcorder can run you upwards of $400 or a bit more. You can also get one that uses SD and XD memory cards, the same ones your still digital camera uses. These cameras tend to be a bit cheaper, but no less useful than the more expensive ones.

Before choosing the camera that is right for you, you must first ask yourself some questions. Do you want the ease and convenience of a digital camera? Or, do you prefer look and feel of the old school film and tape cameras?

Once you decide this, it will make the choices much easier to make.
