Are you just being nice when you tell a friend that his or her artwork looks good? And are your friends just humoring you when they tell you that your work is cool?

It's all about the psychology. I failed miserably as an artist. My friends used to tell me that my work wasn't even good, but it wasn't that bad! I used to draw items laid out in front of me and turn them into black chunky masses of charcoal within ten minutes, so I knew my peers were lying. It was all in their initial reactions and the way they said it.

I used to struggle with paints for hours on end as I tried to etch my massive imagination onto a 20" x 32" blank canvas, and then I'd end up three hours later with a regurgitated mess heap on paper. It was funny. How do I come to that conclusion? Because my friends used to walk into my dorm room and fall over themselves laughing and on the brink of tears! Please don't get me wrong, I have some brilliant friends, but I'm just not that good at it. I've never aspired to be the next art contemporary genius. I've since had to channel my talents in other directions. But remember that it's a telltale sign that a work of art is not up-to-par if it gets laughed at at first sight!

Just as obvious as laughing, a long pause can say it all. If it takes more than two seconds between seeing an art contemporary piece and saying, "Yeah, that's really cool," then the artwork in question probably stinks. Whether it's yours or your friends, somebody is going to have to learn to lie a bit better because feelings are going to get shot down!

Art contemporary is for everybody, and any form of self-expression in the current day is art contemporary. However, some things just don't make the grade on any level and nobody can really dispute that, can they? It isn't a problem, my art was like that! Just remember that an artist shouldn't set out to please anybody with his or her work if it is true art contemporary, because it is all about what is inside the artist's mind. I think that producing work for someone else to buy takes away from the quality of the art, but maybe that's just me! All artists need to make a living, right?
